Where I got the idea for this DIY Ouija board project

I originally got the idea years ago from the now-defunct ReadyMade magazine. Since then, my husband has made several for me, each one a little different. I keep an eye out for old Ouija boards at garage sales — usually the cheapest place to pick one up. You can buy a new one at Amazon, though, for about $20.

I use vintage Ouija boards picked up at yard sales throughout the year.

What you’ll need for this DIY Ouija board project

  • Ouija board
  • Square dowels, about 1/2-inch square
  • Black spray paint to paint dowels
  • Rubber “feet” to keep the wood from scratching your furniture and screws to attach them
  • Vintage or new metal handles (2) and hardware to attach them
  • Strong glue like Gorilla Glue
  • Drill
  • Clear polyurethane varnish to protect the surface of the board

How to make your DIY Ouija board project

  1. Cut dowels to the size you want. These run almost the full length of the board, but you can make them shorter, if you’d like.
  2. Spray paint dowels and let dry.
  3. Apply a thin layer of polyurethane varnish to the top of the board, making sure to get all the edges. Let dry completely.
  4. Glue dowels to board and let glue dry completely.
  5. Attach handles to each side of the board. Most likely you will need a drill and screws, but it’s also possible to glue the handles. They just won’t be as sturdy.
  6. Attach feet to dowels. Again, my husband screwed these in, but you can glue, if you’d prefer.
  7. Your board is ready for use!

IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTE: Even though the board has a coating on it, I still put all my food on plates or bowls and then put the plates on the tray. Unless you’re using food-safe varnish, you don’t want to put your food directly on the tray.
