Create your Day of the Dead tablescape

Of course, I love the over-the-top Day of the Dead decor — sugar skull everything in a riot of glittery bright colors. But this year, I wanted a more traditional look for my Day of the Dead tablescape. Here are some ideas for a classic look.

Why you should celebrate Day of the Dead

Dia de los muertos is like the flip side of Halloween. Instead of fear of the dead, Day of the Dead is a celebration of remembrance for loved ones who have passed away.

The foundation for Day of the Dead tablescape

I started my tablescape with one of my vintage Mexican blankets to use as a tablecloth. This large wool blanket is vibrant in reds and purples with splashes of greens, blues and mustard. These blankets can be pricey on Etsy or eBay, but keep your eyes out at estate and garage sales for better prices.

Use what you have

My 12-year-old cactus became the centerpiece. Although this is a slow-growing type, after years, it’s gotten to be almost a foot tall. Here in Ohio, I keep it indoors year-round.

Vintage dishes make the difference

I layered vintage dishes atop a faux wooden charger and added wooden utensils, Mexican and decorative glassware and vintage napkins.

For a fun DIY project, you can make these leather napkin rings from an old belt.

For a finishing touch, try a Frida or Day of the Dead themed tea towel. I have more than a dozen for sale in my Etsy shop, handyjan.etsy.com.
