DIY quilted greeting card

DIYs with vintage quilts are everywhere — sweatshirts, coats, pillows and so much more. I took that theme to greeting cards and made these amazing little cards to send to friends and family.

This all started when I discovered a treasure trove of quilt squares at a Tipp City, Ohio, antique store, Midwest Memories Antique Mall. I got an entire bin full of hundreds of tiny quilt squares for only $10 — quite the find.

What to do with such a discovery? I was in the process of wrapping presents for my dear friend, Susan, and I used the quilt squares for that project plus the greeting cards. You can see how I used the quilt squares to wrap gifts here: Creative quilt gift wrapping idea

Supplies you’ll need for this DIY quilted greeting card

Here are the supplies and tools I used for this project:

  • Plain blank cards, available at Michaels or other craft stores
  • Quilt pieces. I used these tiny quilt squares, but you can cut your own or even use scraps from quilts
  • Permanent glue stick
  • Sewing machine
  • Iron
  • Coordinating thread

How to make this DIY quilted greeting card

  • Spread the glue stick over the center of the card, where you plan to affix the quilt pieces
  • Place your quilt squares in the pattern you want
  • Put your iron on its lowest temperature setting and give the card a quick once-over with the iron
  • Sew directly onto the card, following the outline of the quilt squares

Options for a DIY quilted greeting card

If you don’t have a sewing machine, don’t worry. These cards look just as cute without sewing them. You can just glue on the quilt squares and you’re good to go.

You can also apply a thin layer of decoupage glue to help affix the quilt squares.

Zig zag or straight stitch? If you’re using a sewing machine, you can use either stitch. I experimented with both stitches and also varied the length and width of stitches. Personally, I liked the zig zag with a narrow length so it created a tight zig zag, but all my variations looked great (in my opinion!).
