Baked grapefruit with hot honey is the bomb
Warm baked grapefruit shines with hot honey glaze
Jump to RecipeAs a native Texan, I grew up on big, juicy Texas grapefruit. At home, we typically just cut the fruit in half and sprinkled it with sugar. It was a delicious breakfast staple, but also a bit pedestrian.
My grandmother elevated grapefruit by broiling it. She sprinkled it with sugar and set it briefly under the broiler. It was there just long enough for the sugar to bubble up and form a brulee-like topping. It was absolutely delicious. But I wanted to experiment on this idea, and I do think I’ve found a way to raise the humble grapefruit to gourmet status in this recipe for baked grapefruit with hot honey.
What makes baked grapefruit with hot honey special
Three things really set this recipe apart:
- Baking the grapefruit. Taking the time to actually bake the grapefruit and not just broil it allows the entire grapefruit to warm through. That heat helps ensure every bite is sweet and juicy.
- Hot honey. The hot honey adds just that little extra zing, giving you three flavor profiles all together — tart from the grapefruit itself, sweet from the honey, and a spicy heat from the hot honey.
- Sea salt: Sea salt sprinkled across the top of the grapefruit creates a mouth-watering sensation.
Tips for making baked grapefruit with hot honey
- Use a knife to cut around the edge of the grapefruit and along the sections before you bake it. This makes it so much easier to eat.
- Don’t add the hot honey until after the grapefruit is baked. This will give you the most hot honey flavor.
- Use big flakey sea salt. The big flakes burst in your mouth with an intense flavor.

Texas grapefruit is perfect for this recipe
Of course you can use any grapefruit, but Red Ruby Texas Grapefruit really is the best, in my humble opinion. If you can’t find it at your grocery store, you can order it from Pittman & Davis, a longtime purveyor of South Texas fruit.
