This side dish comes together quickly with just a few ingredients – most of which you probably already have on hand.
- 2 12-ounce bags of frozen green peas
- 2 slices thick-cut bacon
- 1 tablespoon black pepper
- 1 clove garlic
- 1 shallot
- Olive oil
- Salt to taste
Easy options
Here are a couple of ways to alter this Black Pepper and Bacon Green Peas.
- Make it vegetarian by leaving out the bacon. Although the bacon definitely adds its own flavor, the garlic, shallots and black pepper will do their own magic without the bacon.
- Scale it down for fewer servings by using only one bag of peas, one piece of bacon and 1/2 tablespoon of black pepper. I would keep the same amount of garlic and shallots for my taste, but you can also halve those, if you prefer.
- Swap onions for shallots if you don’t have shallots on hand. Just use a half an onion. I prefer yellow onions for that sweet flavor, but white onions also work.
- Swap garlic powder for fresh garlic. Use 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder if you don’t have fresh garlic on hand.

- Season with 1 tablespoon of black pepper and salt to taste. Stir well and saute for 1 more minute.
About the bacon
In our house, we are big fans of Wright Brand Bacon. The thickness and flavor are truly better than any other bacon brand we’ve tried — and, yes, we are the kind of people who’ve had our own bacon taste test! You can find out more about Wright and where to buy it at Wright Bacon
